Last Vocaloid I'll probably do for a while until I get all my homework sorted out.

Oliver is an English Vocaloid, voiced by an actual, unnamed British boy. I don't know why his design looks as if he was sailing art part of the navy, and his boat got attacked. Alas, regardless of how he looks, he still encounters the funky English problem as many English Vocaloids, but it's slightly better as would be expected from a Vocaloid3. You can judge for yourself.
Apparently he's super popular too.

Oh, and before I go, is it apparent that he's supposed to be lying down?

What is this much text doing on an art blog?

No pretty images today. I thought I'd do something a little different.

I've got a confession to make: truth is, I've been cheating on someone.

I don't know what happened. We've been going strong for two years now, but it's been dwindling for the past little while. Sometimes, a spark would ignite here and there, but that only lasts so long. Then someone better kind of showed up.

And that person's name is Tumblr.

Though I guess calling a blogging platform a person doesn't hold any correlation, I digress. Anyways, cheating-context aside, I've been using Tumblr for a long while now, and due to not knowing what this primary blog business was all about, I've had an empty blog I couldn't get rid of hanging on my account and making reblogging a pain. Upon coming across a nifty web app that allows you to import your Blogger to Tumblr, I thought it was time to bring that Tumblr back to life.

There are certainly things about Tumblr's focus on microblogging that is alluring for me. As more dedicated readers may have noticed, as time wore on, my words got shorter and shorter. Even though I made this blog with the focus of just displaying art, I've always felt like that I still had some obligation to include a reasonable amount of reading material along with it. And that includes having a title, and I know that that is one thing I wouldn't miss. The option's still there, but now I don't feel like I'm pressured to have one.
Moving to Tumblr would effect the type of content available too. I'll probably make use of the ability to reblog to post things like tutorials or art tips or anything of the likes (nothing too self indulgent though, that's what I have my reblogging Tumblr for). I don't know how I feel about Tumblr being a social platform, as I was never one who found online socializing to be an enjoyable experience.

I guess I'll keep doing this two-timing act for a while, trying to run both blogs simultaneously, and see how it goes. After two years, I still have some sentimental attachment to Blogger so I can't just leave it in the dust.

So for those of you on Tumblr, rejoice! Now keeping up with updates will be much easier.

Some guy basically thought this picture was about nosebleeds from the tissue.

So good news: I won't be doing any more serious photography anywhere in the near future! Huzzah!

Remember my last post, the picture of the stuffed tiger, and how those were going to be what I was going hand in for my assignment photos but I chose to redo it last minute? Yeah, see how different my concept became now? I would ask if the theme was, but since I'm only showing one picture due to confidentiality issues, good luck with that.

Whatever, I liked this picture much better anyways. It was generally more well received by the class when I ~~presented~~ awkwardly stood there while the class commented on my pictures. Whereas some people...

Don't fret. I realized I didn't post a photo from another photography assignment I did a while back. I'm not posting the one I actually submitted due to more confidentiality issues so a reject will just have to do.

Long story short, I was going to use these pictures for my final project, but four days before the due date, I decided to redo everything from scratch.
Try figuring out what the theme is because my TA and prof sure couldn't.

BONUS PIC: Basically, what we had to do for this rushed in-class assignment was to make a collage in Photoshop. So with all the Photoshop editing powers invested in me, I made this. Even though this isn't as awesome as an uncropped picture of a piano in an over-pixelated forest, I still think this is pretty great.

Oh hey, more school work. Of course it would be because when else would I be taking photos? Well, don't worry, because I won't be taking them for that much longer. Thank god, because I have no talent for this.

The point of these pictures was to exercise what we learned about composition by photographing two series of photos of two different scenes, where all you're able to alter in your camera angle. I'm not a photographer, but I hope you like my photos anyways.

Series one is a flower pot.

And series two is a glass vase.

There was zero editing involved other than some cropping. Basically all I had at my disposal was a camera and the sunlight.

Anyways, I've got a bit more to say about this guy as opposed to my last Vocaloid. I believe Utatane has some connection to Nico Nico Douga during its contraception, other than the fact that his voice bank is provided by Piko. You know, the guy who can sign like a boy and girl? Well now you know.

Random note: you know what I discouvered? The button where you can draw straight lines. Damn, is that ever useful.

When was the last time I posted one of these? SF-A2 miki I believe. That was almost a year ago.And holy crap did they release a bunch of new Vocaloids since then. I thought it gonna take a long time with the ones they already had when Vocaloid 3 was non-exsistant. All I have to say is that I better get my drawing on.

At least I've got some incentive to practice colouring. Obviously, I don't do that too often with my line sketches.

I usually do a short introduction to the Vocaloid I'm drawing, right? Yes, this is CUL. Her box art sucks, and her design is uninspiring.

You know what else I usually do with these pictures? Give it a background, or at least an honest attempt to. Woops.

I freaking love Kikwis

I know, I know. If the Link Kikwi wasn't there, you would just be like "Why is there a Kikwi with a flower on it's head?" But I wanted to keep it simple, and Zelda has too many things in her design that would've taken that away.

That aside...

Oh my god, I love Kikwis. They're so adorabibibile. Like when I first met Matchi, I wanted to steal it. When Oolo went up to the sky, not only was a super amused of it being carried by the Scrapper, I was super excited to have the cuteness of the Kikwis super close and convienant, and not have me run around Faron Woods looking for 'em. (Have some of them disappeared after the water drained out? I can't seem to find some of them.) Man, why couldn't I have carried Matchi on my back. I would've gladly offered, as opposed to having someone like Princess Ruto force her way on me.

Just imagine how awesome Legend of QQ would be. Link, all duked out with his Deku Stick and leaf shield, plopping around Faron Woods, searching for Zelda. Except, you'll never get to use your Deku Stick, because 90% of the time, you'll be crawling around on all fours. Just think Metal Gear Solid, but instead of a box you've got the bush on your back.

I'd buy it.

Well, she's gone through a stylized incarnation, so I guess it's only natural to also get a realistic counterpart. Lotsa references used for this, mainly a dall sheep with the horns of a mountain goat.

I coloured her from memory, and you can see my awesome memory of her design. You can tell how often I draw her. But kidding aside, I have been wanting to redesign her for a while. I gave myself some liberties with the colours to hopefully come up something interesting. Design's not bad, but I'll probably going through some more possibilities - as well as styles, before I settle on something.

For all my wonderful friends.

I can't believe I actually finished this in two days...

I think I've always intended, but I've never got around to making a tribute for my friends so here you go: all my friends turned into animals which are then turned into stuffed animals. And just in time for New Years, too.

Have fun guessing what the animals are what who they're supposed to represent. Some of them are more obvious than others, such as Inkeh just being her fursona, but for the majority, I had to come up with an animal counterpart. I really hope I didn't forget anyone because I don't really like vectoring.

But yes, how often do you see me vectoring anything? Uh, never. But I thought it suited the picture I was trying to make, so I went through the pain staking process of fiddling with the pen tool to produce with (with some cheap tricks thrown in of course).

Original sketch. It's missing some people because I couldn't fit them on the paper so I drew it in PS.

I might make a wallpaper-friendly version where I just isolate each character on their own, because a lot of detail is blocked off with the layering, and that makes me sad considering all the work I put into it.
Speaking of layers, I think I used the most layers I've ever had for a picture, topping at around 150.

Meme: Draw This Again

Look at that difference.

When some people do this meme, I don't really see too much of an improvement in the before and after picture. Maybe it's due to them just redrawing a picture a year or a couple of months old. So went all the way back into my picture archives and dug up this piece of crap from 7 years ago to ensure that wouldn't happen.

Check out my MS Paint and mouse skill, guys. Check out that anatomy, and my super original OCs (but you already knew that). I don't really remember what the whole context was, but guess she's watching something tragic... or something. Doesn't look like she's really sad. Maybe's she's actually too shocked to display an emotion? We will never know.
At least it's obvious that she's sad in the picture. I mean, look, there's tears. Nothing says despair better than throwing in a couple of tears. Cuts and bruises too. And muscles, because, realistically, you can't be stick and be fighting off evil demons at the same time.

Look at dat beautiful face

So I've got nothing done for Christmas thus far, and it looks like what little gift art will just have to be late. In the mean time, I'll show you this beautiful piece I made for someone else.

I know that it's nothing too difficult to create, nor legit, blood-and-tears art. It's pretty much a traced - yes, traced - image of Link's face on a rainbow background. Actually, I didn't have any carbon paper so I used newspaper instead. That's what you call being creative.

And I never knew how useful retarder could be until doing this. Man does acrylics dry fast, which was hard to work around for me because I've worked mainly with tempera. I didn't mind it that much because this is mainly cellshaded anyways.

Anyways, it's super simple, and made it within a day, but I got an awesome reaction from it, and I guess that's what counts. :)

Project: Art Noveau Phantom of the Opera

I already introduced the topic on a previous a post, but in case you're too lazy to either click the link or scroll down, I'll recap for you:

We had to pick a graphic design style (New York School or Swiss design, say) and were given the choice to either make a poster based on a movie or a famous place. I don't know how famous place got so many votes, because I know like one person who actually chose to do that boring thing.

Anyways, my partner and I chose to do Phantom of the Opera in the style of Alphonse Mucha.

And there you have it. But before I post the actual poster, would you like to see some more drafts first?

A cleaned up version of one of the drafts, where I pretty mush centered and neatened things up a bit, as well as give you an idea as to what colour scheme we would be using.

Our final second draft. Made her looking towards you a bit, widened the space allotted for the title, as well as added a text box for all the movie-like stuff like actors and what not.

So which draft exactly did we end up going with? The answer's none of the above, but a draft my partner put forward. I've never seen the movie before, but I think this is supposed to be based off the scene where the Phantom meets Christine at a mirror, and she realizes it's actually a door. I don't really know, I'm just getting this off hearsay.

Sleep? What's that? I don't even know if you could count those two measly hours of sleep I got as actual revitalizing sleep. But yeah, if you already couldn't guess, I spent two all nighters on this thing just so I could get the impossible done and have this ready for presentation day, even though we wouldn't be able to print it in all 36" by 24" glory until much much later. I actually have the poster sitting in my room right now, ready to be handed in but can't because my TA isn't at school until Wednesday.

I've grown to have a greater appreciation for Illustrator and after doing this, it has opened my eyes as to what the program - or really Live Trace - can accomplish. Yup, I pretty much made all the people out of Live Trace.

Oh, hello there final project. Even though it was the cause of much shedding of blood, sweat, and tears (mainly tears), I'm pretty damn proud of it. Best of all, if you couldn't tell from the gears and stuff in the box that something is supposed to happen to the figures when turned, movement is smooth and works most of the time without issues.

Yeah, our thing is pretty lame, but at least it's beautiful, dammit! That's all we have. We were able to secure a spot in the spring showcase from it, so I'm not ashamed of it at all!
I think after the horrible "definitely ugly" rating we got when we pitched our idea, we just strove to make my prof eat his words.

We had to draw drafts for our poster assignment. I decided to bring my tablet so I'd have the convienance of using colours (which I later found out - after I finished all my sketches - was not the intention as I needed it to be done on paper). I got bored halfway so I drew a dino.

Oh, by the way, I finally got Skyward Sword. It arrived yesterday, but I can't play it. That's all I'll say for now because I'm a little swamped with work right now to write anymore.

Skyward Sword on the 20th. Probably the first time I've ever been this excited over a game release, probably due to me not really getting into gaming until a couple 'o years ago. No, correction, it should say "getting into Zelda" instead of "gaming" because me? A gamer? As if.
Even though me preordering the game while it was on sale is awesome and all, I'm totally missing out on all the preorder deals being released now. Like this:

Hybrid Nurse

Hybrid Nurse

...which was the theme of last week's manga academy meet. It was randomly chosen which accounts for it's weird nature. Though the word "hybrid" is pretty ambiguous, I assumed it to mean half man half animal, thus I made this centaur thing. I was looking forward to showing everyone my work - even if my bag totally smudged the pencil at the bottom - because I actually spent a while trying to get the horse part and the head right.
Unfortunately, when I went to the room, I didn't see anyone that looked like they belonged to the club was there. And I know it wasn't because I was too early and no one had come yet, because I was 15 minutes late. So instead of sitting in a computer lab and drawing, I sat in the library and watched my friend do some 3D modelling. For two hours.

That aside, on the same kind of tangent as the hybrid nurse, here, have some quads.

These pictures are actually the result of me trying to brainstorm updated designs for my neglected Subeta pets. As you can see, the designs are pretty boring - as many of them are just plain pets - so I've gotta get my creative on. Man, coming up with quad designs are hard.
And then there's the deer. I don't have a deer pet on Subeta, so it's just chilling.

Project: "Tipsy Jazz"

Magazine Spread Assignment

The title of the this article is "tipsy jazz" and it's about interior design, more specifically "jazz inspired bar design". Yeah, so totally unlike me to pick something like this to do, right? Well, I didn't pick it, nor did I approve of the title. It was more like it was imposed by my partner and I shrugged and went with it. You might call that being a door mat, but I call it being a good partner. I know how to compromise.
(Though I sorely regret not going solo so I could make the magazine about horror movies or a hair magazine featuring Yu Gi Oh characters...)

Honestly, I'm freaking out about this project. Even though I'm done and can put it behind me, I have a really nagging feeling of impending failure. For one, it got super stressful the day - or really, last couple 'o hours - before the presentation due to issues that kept cropping up while I was finishing up the project. I think that's all I'll mention now, because the story is a long one. But part of it does include my partner. That's all I'll say.

Unfortunately, I don't think I should show my partner's page, because it's technically not mine's. I know it's a lame excuse, but I got a better one: I don't have a picture of it either.

Ugh. I hate this assignment, and I'm not proud of what I submitted.

I pretty much recycled the style I used for Pumpkin Girl a couple of years ago, because it's easy and I'm short on time and motivation - but mostly time.

I used a bit more colours than I did, but that's okay because it compensates for the lack of detail and a good drawing in general. The two were supposed to go together nicely, but because of the simplicity of this one, it doesn't really work that well anymore.

Yawn. Boring picture is boring. I just wanted to do something for Halloween, so this is what you get.

Another year, another entry into a con mascot contest

I derno why I keep entering into art contests because I never win, orz.
Maybe it's just because art is the only thing I can do? I derno.

Anyways, another year, another con, which means another mascot contest. I usually don't enter into them because I'm intimidated by the fact that this is contest is, possibly, province-wide, and I'm pretty sure there's a really good artist lurking somewhere.

We were given the choice to do either (and I quote):

1.) Cute Pink hair girl
2.) Cute Pink hair boy
3.) Cute Pink hair furry thingy.

And I'm pretty sure I'm gonna win by default at this rate because - unless one got submitted since the last batch of mascots were posted - I have yet to see any male entries. Which is probably why I opted to go with the male mascot because I knew there'd be too many people drawing girls.

I'll save you nice people from hearing me go on and on about, for example, how much I hate how the scarf came out and how I half-assed most of it, to talk about the con. Notice how I tentatively named him AR-kun and not AE-kun? Well, if you remember or care from last year, instead of Anime Evolution we had Cos & Effect. I'm still assuming that AE isn't going to happen in 2012 neither, thus comes this new con.

I see absolutely no relation to Anime Evolution. Nope, not even one.

When it was first announced, it was met with suspicion, but I think that's now subsided and it's welcomed as our new con for 2012. At least their planning abilities look more sound, as they've already booked a venue at the prestigious Vancouver Convention Center.

Of course, I already sent an application to be in Artist Alley.

On another note, I saw on Facebook that new staff has already been hired for AE so maybe we'll be having double cons this year?

Seem familiar? I know this anatomy chart by heart.

These drawings reminds me of the stuff I would produce for the manga drawing section I used to run last year as an exec for animu club. Maybe it's because I made them for a club I joined this year, Manga Academy. We didn't have an anime club at our school, so I had to settle with this.

But I also joined because when I asked them what they did, they said they all they did was draw, so I was sold.

I don't know how much I'll learn from this club, because they go over the basics when I need to help on more specific things. Not to undermine the execs artistic abilities - I'm sure they're probably better than mine's - but I think I need the professional eye of an art teacher to get me in the right track. You know, someone to tell me to stop drawing animu and such.

At least they used Loomis as a reference and not Christopher Hart.

An idea for a new mural on my chalkboard wall. Obviously, the idea isn't very developed so it'll be a while before I get started on that.

What I do in my 5 hr breaks: I draw brides with guns.


An initial concept for our Alice in Wonderland inspired automata we eventually have to make for a class. In it, we're going to have Alice, upside down and stuck in a hole, her legs flailing, with the rabbit running around her. The Cheshire cat will be popping from the mushroom. I also have the sketches for some of the models.

I've got a funny story about the last picture. When we went up to present the idea to the class, my prof circled the "definitely ugly" section on the marking sheet because he couldn't understand why Alice was "upside down and obscured". Has he never watched Alice in Wonderland before?

Recipe: Pumpkin Squares

Pumpkin Squares

Honestly, I don't know why I didn't post this recipe sooner, because I make 'em every time I start seeing pumpkins popping up in stores. I guess it's kind of like a traditional thing now, like how people bake a bunch of cookies for Christmas. Except for me, I make pumpkin squares in October.

Basically, pumpkin squares are just pumpkin muffins baked in a square pan. This particular one is a bit plain because we didn't have any chocolate chips on hand. I might drizzle it on top if I ever get my hands on a bar.

And I know the picture doesn't really show it justice, with the clutter, and it still being in the pan (silicon ftw), and how it's already been nommed on, and just the whole fact that it could be anything tucked in there... Oh well, I guess you just have to trust me on this one. I draw, I don't take photos.

I used to take a lot of cooking classes offered in the community center when I was a kid, and that's where I got this recipe from. I think the class was a weekly baking class or what not. I was still elementary then, and I've been making this recipe ever since. However, my mom praised me for this particular batch of squares, calling it the "best one I've ever made", even though I really don't think I made it all that differently than from a year or two ago.

Pumpkin Squares

1/2 butter (you could probably sub it with yogurt, I just didn't have any on hand)
1 cup sugar
1 cup brown sugar
4 eggs
2 cup pumpkin filling
2 1/4 cup flour
2 1/4 tsp baking powder
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1 cup chocolate chips

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees.
Cream the butter (if using), then mix in the sugars until evenly combined. Beat in the eggs ("until fluffy," as quoted by the recipe). Afterwards, add the pumpkin filling.
Add the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and nutmeg into the batter and mix until all the dry ingredients are moist. (Refer to muffin method.) Add the chocolate chips.
Pour into a square pan and bake for 40 - 50 minutes (even though I ended up leaving it in the oven for an hour and a half... ick) or until a knife comes clean.

Anyways, I won't make you have to put up with more of my 3:00 AM crappy writing so bye bye.

Another one of my friend's RPG OCs.

The same friend who requested the previous refs asked for another.

This time, the character is for a Kingdom Hearts themed RP, hence the coat, which was referenced off Axel.
Cookie for the person who can guess who the character design is based off of. The hair's a big giveaway, I think.

Anyways, I haven't gotten the approval yet with the eye colours nor the design, as I didn't get the hex codes for reference this time. Hopefully, once I get this bad boy to recipient, she'll approve and I wouldn't need to edit and re-upload it, as well as write a comment about how I had to fix it.

I was discussing Yu Yu Hakusho with my sister earlier, and I guess that got me thinking about the lack of YYH fanart I have - or really, lack of any fanart not relating to Vocaloid. That becomes quite an issue when you go selling prints when all you have are things people don't know about. Besides, I'm sort of in an artist's rut right now so relying on other people's characters would be of the best interest.

But back to Yu Yu Hakusho. I think they need some more fanart so I'll help by contributing. And since Hiei's awesome, I'm gonna do fanart of him first.

As well as a bunch of messages on my Facebook. I'm gonna have fun going through that.

But with going with tradition, I drew another picture of good ol' Yukiko for my birthday. This time, it wasn't half-assed and last minute. I spent a good three days or so working on it, though I still think I could've spent more time on the skin and refining the details and such. However, overall, I think it looks the most realistic and colourful skin I've painted thus far.

After all, I do these yearly paintings I guess to keep track of my improvement. I suppose that's why I didn't draw her all animu, as I have been practicing something similar to realism.

But that's not all. Since I found out that the above picture doesn't look so great once shrunk, I did something more stylized for things like icons and such, because only my art can grace the face of my online profiles.

All these pictures have just been chilling in my living room, waiting for the moment when I would upload them. So since all these pictures are so diverse, I don't really have much to say as an introduction, other than the fact that I did them all in summer.

I'm not a big fan of pop art, but the more recent stuff certainly have a certain pop art feel about them. Must be due to the bright, unconventional, limited colour palette, but as mention before, these quick sketches are my excuse to play around with things.

Originally, the colours were going to be purple and yellow, except after playing around with the hue and saturation filter, I thought this was more suitable for the type of character she is.

Recipe: Tiramisu

Tiramisu

When I was taking it out, my mom kept commenting how nice it looked. Damn right does it ever look nice. Especially with the ribbon around it, even though it was tied on really ugly, but it really needed that ribbon to keep the lady fingers in tact.

I originally made it for an ice breaker pot luck for one of the clubs I joined, but due to issues which included a being super tired and a dead wall clock, I missed it. Instead, I brought it over to a baby shower that was also scheduled for that evening, but I was going to miss in favour for my club. I don't think the ice breaker needed anymore food anyways, according to my friend who was there.

The recipe I used is a combination of a bunch of tiramisu recipes I found online. And even though I'm including a recipe for lady fingers, I only used that recipe to make the rounds inside it. The outer ones were store bought, and man, are they ever plain. They look so soft in the package.

Tiramisu

Lady Fingers

1/2 cup flour
2 eggs, seperated
1/3 cup sugar
pinch cream of tartar

Filling

1 tub mascapone cheese
2 cups (500 oz) whipping cream
1/2 cup powdered sugar
2 tbsp Kahula

Syrup

1 cup water
1/2 cup espresso
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup Kahula

For the lady fingers, beat the yolks until thickened and lemon coloured. Mix in the sugar, saving about 1 tbsp. In a separate bowl with clean beaters, whip the egg whites until they're frothy, then add the cream of tartar. Continue to whip till stiff peaks form. Quickly fold the egg whites into the yolks, then fold in the flour until combined. Pipe into lines or spread into a round. Bake for about 20 minutes in 400 degrees.
For the syrup, bring the water to a boil before adding the sugar, espresso, and Kahula. Simmer until the sugar is fully dissolved. Put aside.
For the filling, combine the sugar, Kahula, and mascapone cheese together. Gradually beat the whipping cream into the mixture with an egg beater until soft peaks form.
To make the tiramisu, brush on the syrup on the lady fingers, and soak both the rounds in the syrup. Line a 9 inch spring form pan with the lady fingers around the diameter, and place one lady finger round on the bottom. Pour about half of the filling before putting on the last round, and using the rest of the filling for the rest. Dust with cocoa powder.
Let it sit overnight for a minimum of one day.

Yeah, my relatives were raving about how nice it looked, and how it could've totally sold for money. They even told me that I could quit school and start some kind of cake business (as a joke, of course). I don't mind building them websites or doing design work for money, because I know I don't suck at that, but baking? Eh, I don't know if I'll ever have enough confidence in my baking abilities for that. I wouldn't mind the extra money, though. 40 dollars a cake? I'm in.

Man, I love doing these quick sketches. It's an excuse to play with things and like filters, colour combos, styles, and all that other stuff I usually never try out when I'm painting something serious (like the picture I'm working on now). Plus, I love like how my messy sketching lineart style looks.

But, I suppose the term "quick" is relative. It was quick compared to my more formal, portfolio worthy pieces, but it still took two-three hours of my time... time I could've been spending sleeping as it was like 3 AM when I decided to go through with it.

So in the end of the day (or really, morning), I went to bed at 6 on a school night. I was okay with it, though, because at least I went to class, as opposed to skipping it like I did last week.

I guess this is a follow up to a previous post where I had all my draft logos. I'm going to fast forward through previous drafts and just go directly to the final products. We decided to go with the red star in the ring, just cause.
Another big aspects of this project was the design of the business card and letter head. Personally, I think our card is pretty sweet.

The checkered part of the star represents a hole I manually cut out before I handed it in.

Yes, I was this close to having to go back, replacing the logo with an older draft, and then reprinting everything during the day it was due (and admits the rush of all the other people who planned to print last minute) all because my prof told me the logo was too generic and how she preferred the older one. If it was anyone else, I wouldn't shrugged and been like, "Meh, it's too late. Already got it printed." But this is the prof we're talking about. She even urged me to do it, saying it was worth the extra effort.
In the end, my TA convinced me otherwise. I bit the bullet, and I spent my night scheming up bullshit to relate our logo to explosives and not so much film and photography. Good thing my partner's particularly good at that.

P.S. Did anyone notice that our company is Russian?

Killarney Anime Club Banner

Well, howdy there. Welcome to my first post of October.
...and that's all I have to say about that, really.

I'm pretty sure that most of you already knew that I was part of my high school's anime club as an executive last year. For those of you who didn't, well, are you really surprised? Obviously, I'm not in it now because I don't even attend high school anymore, but that's not the point. The point is is that I was asked to do the banner for club's day and I agreed, even though anime club is just one of those clubs which really doesn't need the publicity because we get a bunch of members on clubs day (it's the staying part which we have an issue).

Most time was spent on the girl and the boy. I used them as a guinea pig, in a sense, to find a simple, but sell-able, colouring style I could use for my prints as I know not everyone is into my painterly, messy style. I know I'm bending my uniqueness to suit other's taste, but that's how these kind of things works... until you get famous and everyone is pining for your stuff, anyways.
I found out that playing with filters is very useful.

As for the rest of it... yeah, it's as lazy as it looks. Just a whole bunch of splatter brushes in different colours, tweaks here and there, and voila! At least it's predominantly white, yet colourful, as instructed. Probably pretty eye catching, though it's not the couple which makes it so.

I drew another girl I was planning to add onto the banner, but scrapped it because I fell out of favour for her once I starting doing the lineart.

She was supposed to sit on the letters.

As a side note, I find it depressing how I'm having so much difficulty doing my homework right now. It's depressing because all we're doing is drawing, and school has managed to give me headache. Why, IAT 106? Why are you tearing me away from my love?
(Well, at least this is technical drawing and not creative, artistic drawing, otherwise that really would've been depressing.)

Recipe: Melon Bread

Done! Looks like I already ate one.

Crap picture quality, because I was baking them at night... but when were my pictures ever of good quality?

For those who don't know, melon bread doesn't actually have melon inside of it. It's just some bread with a cookie dough on the top with a pattern cut into it which resembles the surface of a melon. Yeah.

I had originally planned to make it earlier, a few days earlier to be exact. In fact, I made the cookie dough on that day I originally planned to do it, but after finding out the scale we had sucked, I opted to wait until I could borrow my friend's scale instead. Sure, even though the measurements for the cookie dough is also given out in grams, I just searched up how much the weight of so and so equaled in cups.

I could've done the same for the bread, yes, but since it was my first time ever baking bread, I didn't want to take any chances. I at least wanted to achieve a texture similar to Chinese bakery bread: soft and light.

None of them actually turned out as golden or as melon-bread-like as I wanted. I think the former is due to our pale North American eggs compared to the bright orange yolks of Asia. The latter is due to not enough cookie dough and thus the pattern being destroyed during the second rise. Yup, I learned a lot, at least. Some other stuff I found out along the way was:

There is a "keep warm" setting on my oven and it's very useful for rising.
You really need to coat your finger in bread flour to check if it has risen enough, otherwise the dough would just stick to you.
I mess up a lot if I don't check the recipe frequently.
If your bread dough is too sticky even after kneading forever, adding in some more butter helps wonders.

Ehh, too lazy to paraphrase the recipe, so why don't you just check out the video yourself?

Planning to make more soon while I've still got my friend's scale. Hopefully it wouldn't have that salty tinge next time.

I think out of all the courses I'm taking so far this semester, graphics is probably my favourite. I like my prof, the concepts are easy to understand, what I learn is useful, and I like our assignments. Well, no surprise being interested in the arts, right? Good thing I decided to put it in my schedule. I wanted to give myself an easy course to ease my way into uni, you know?

Anyways, our first assignment is to make a logo for a fake company. Keyword: fake. Whereas other people were doing things such as book stores and bubble tea shops, my partner came up with a bomb shop. And that was that.

We were only supposed to have three drafts max - and for both of us - but I went out of my way to double that number.

It's supposed to be a grenade with a turtle shell pattern on it.

Originally, it was going to be a bomb with it casting a shadow of a skull on the other side. Later on, I started liking the clean lines of just a rounded shape, as opposed to adding a fuse on top so I left it as is. I thought the star would just be cool to add in.

There's a (lame) Yu Gi Oh 5Ds reference in the name.

One of my favourite designs. It'll look nice paired with the bottom one.

This could be like on a t-shirt or something.

More creeper sketches

It kinda sucks drawing on the Skytrain because I don't take too well with motion sickness, drawing in a bumpy vehicle is difficult, and usually, there are either too many or too little people on the Skytrain to draw. Usually, I end up drawing the back of someone's head, which isn't exactly the most interesting thing to sketch. If I'm lucky, there'd be an ad with someone's face on it.

At least ads don't move.

And now some stuff for school. Learning how to do some technical sketches. These are a lot more interesting than my assignments (practicing how to draw straight lines without a ruler, for example).

The best part is the dog.

Recipe: Angel Sponge Cake

Angel cake. Note: it's not the half-eaten on in the back.

No, it's not angel food cake, but this is angel cake - search it up, or, for the lazy people, click on the links. Though calling this an angel cake wouldn't be completely truthful either, because the only resemblance between the two are the colours of sponge I chose to make. I wouldn't know how angel cake would taste, either, because I've never had it. I'm pretty sure it's not supposed to taste like strawberries, vanilla, and "orange".

Anyways, if you were normal, you wouldn't have a cake everyday. And I wouldn't bake a cake just for the hell of it either. Nope, it was my mom's birthday, and I remember the last time I made an awesome cake, she asked for one too. Well, that time has come, but I think I like this one better.

Why? Well, for one, I switched from genoise to actual sponge cake this time. I've been avoiding it though because I hate separating eggs. But because I did, it rose beautifully. Emphasis on the beautifully part.

Cross section

...or at least, every layer minus the bottom layer (AKA the "Fruit Loops" layer - guess what that tasted like) did. Once you break those yolks and it gets into your whites, it's all over. You're better off redoing it.

Angel Cake
Based off this recipe.

2 eggs, separated
1/3 cup cake flour, shifted
1/3 cup sugar
Pinch of salt
Pinch of cream of tartar
For vanilla

1/3 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 cup milk

For Fruit Loops

1/3 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
1/3 tsp orange zest
(Yellow food colouring)

For "strawberry"

1/3 tsp lemon zest
1/2 cup strawberry puree
1/2 tbsp milk
(Red food colouring)

Preheat your oven to 325 degrees and line your pan(s) with parchment paper.
Beat the yolks until its thickened and lightened in colour. Gradually add sugar then flour. Finally, mix in any extracts, liquids, zest, or food colouring you plan to use.
In a separate bowl with an electric mixer, beat egg whites until white and frothy. Add the salt and cream of tartar and continue to beat on high until it starts forming stiff peaks.
Swiftly fold in the whites. Don't mix too much.
Bake for 40 minutes or until it slightly springs back up when you press the center.

I don't actually recommend trying out the strawberry flavour combo, because you can't really taste the strawberries. But apparently the texture is really good.

Notice the other cake in the background of the first picture? That was due to dad taking "no duh" - as in, "No duh, that cake is for her birthday" - for a simple "no". Figures, I shouldn't have expected so much from a parent. On the bright side though, the cake sucked, and that made my cake, in comparison, so much better. You know what this means? I just beat out a professional bakery!

Lasagna

Banana pudding with chocolate shavings

Pics of my dinner I made like a week ago or so because my parents were going out and I didn't feel like eating anymore take out.

Is this really worth a post? Well, I made it, so it does in my book. I'm especially proud of my lasagna because I made it from scratch with no help from a recipe (besides the baking temperature and time), and because of that I didn't see the part where you're supposed to cover it in tinfoil. Woops.
And I found out the hard way that unless you pre-boiled them, you should end in a layer of sauce instead of noodles. They came out way way way too tough, but because they were covered in cheese, I let that pass.
Still yummy, though. Made the sauce from scratch too, and filled it with lotsa meat and not that many vegetables. This is how unhealthy children make their food.

I'm still eating the leftovers. No complaints!

As for the pudding, yeah, I found a recipe. Tasted yummy, though... to me, anyways.

Drawing in moving vehicles is hard

Not many people on the Skytrain today, or at least, many people who were sitting in front of me. The people who were had their backs to me and kept shifting, so I shifted my focus to things like the pictures on ads and even the seats.

Maybe I should bring my shades next time I'm drawing people on the Skytrain so they don't know that I'm staring at them.

I felt like drawing some more on campus because I had an hour to kill and my laptop was dying.

It was a good thing I decided to pack my sketchbook today, because I was stuck waiting in the Skytrain station for 45 minutes so I could pick up my psychology textbook I had ordered. Not only was I not bored with the time I spent sitting there, I felt like I'm one step closer to improving (or at least, in my head).

Hell, I might as well spent my half an hour commute to school doing this. It's generally pretty empty on the Skytrain and bus that early in the morning, which can be a good or bad thing.

Five colour fairy

A friend challenged me to do a speed paint only using a colour palette chosen on Kuler. I've used the site before, but only for web designing purposes. I've never used it as a colour scheme, so it should be interesting.

I picked Lemon Meringue Pie in the Sky, because I thought the teals were befitting for a fairy. Why a fairy? Because that was also suggested to me.

Since the colours were limited, I did something new and made a new layer for each colour. Then I assembled all of them on top of one another. Wished I used more of the purple though, because that's what really gave the colour scheme its pop.

School starts again tomorrow (or today, really) and like all monumental events in my life, I like to mark it off with a drawing. I thought it was also only befitting that I revisit some neglected OCs with a medium I haven't used in a while. Of course that'd I know it's not much, but it's not like I have the time to complete a full blown CG in a couple of hours. Plus, just something about the feel of a pencil that can't beat a tablet pen.

I-Should-Have-Been-Taking-Notes 7.5: Art

Unlike my last post, where it consisted of things I found after I had uploaded my first three batches of doodles, I had this one ready to be scanned and uploaded for a long time. But I, being the lazy me I am, never got around to it. To prove how lazy I am, I still have a small pile of sketches I did back in July I have been meaning to upload for a while now, but probably will wait until the start of September to do so.

Anyways, I didn't upload the art I did in art because this actually contains some stuff that I'm proud of (of course, because it also includes things I did for school).

Disclaimer: This doesn't have every art assignment I had completed for class as I never bothered to take them home (they wasn't a lot anyways, trust me). Thus, even though I have not much to show for it, and even though the class was ultimately an easy A, I did put some effort into getting that A.

Fanart for someone's character, except the term "fanart" implies that I'm a fan of said character, which I'm definitely not. She's basically a mary sue put in the Bleach world.

The concept work for my vegetable marching band picture.

Loosely based off a bird in a birdcage. It was supposed to be inked with actual pen nibs and liquid ink and such, but once I saw that it bled horribly when I used it with a ruler, I gave up.

Ugly self portrait. I prefer the portrait of my friend I drew using a phone picture as a reference. The quality's so bad because I took the picture with my phone camera as it's too big to fit in my scanner.

Another ugly picture, but this time its a painting. Something I did when I was bored. I obviously don't know how skin's supposed to be coloured.

Probably my favourite piece in a while, especially since I did it entirely out of paint and it has a background for once. It was actually put into the yearbook.

I originally also planned to show tendrils of her monster side, and Saya "blooming" in that monster thing at the end of the game (the ending where she turns everybody into monsters like her) but I just gave up. I'll show you how much of it I got done, though.

I gave up because it looked bad so I scrapped it.

Still looks alright, I guess, from afar. I kind of like the picture better with the background blank like this.

I'm kind of tire right now, so I'll keep this short. I won't spoil the game for any of you, but I will say that I didn't find it as sad as people say it is (doesn't mean you won't though, I'm just heartless) and Fuminori is one serious asshole.

Also like to mention that I tried to keep the colours less saturated than what I'm usually used to, and sicne they still look as lively as ever, I consider that a success. (Yup, artsy talk. You don't have to get it.)

Chalkboard scribbles

Back around the end of July, I spent a couple of days painting one of my bedroom walls with green chalkboard paint. By now, it's been covered with scribbles, but I'm been planning to erase much of it to make way for something more cohesive.

To be honest, I just thought this would also be the perfect opportunity to test out the picture quality of my new phone.

My cousin drew a dragon on my wall, and I killed it.

Not bad for a picture taken in low lighting. Looks better than anything my old phone could ever produce.

Recipe: Not-so-fail Cakes

So the cake I made last time (and ultimately failed at) was for preparation for this one. Since I have no faith in my skills as a baker or cook, I couldn't just give out a cake to someone without testing the recipe first. I say this as if I remade the cake again, but I really made an entirely new cake for said person. Anyways, let us continue.

First, my baby:

I know it doesn't look like it, because it looks pretty bad on the front, but it's true. Three days.

Wish I could have taken a picture of the cross section, because layered chocolate and plain cake to make a kind of stripe pattern. The outside is pretty boring being stark white and all save the words, but I intentionally wanted to have it look all innocent on the outside.

Chocolate and White Genoise with Coffee Frosting Proud of it because though it's based off recipes, when I was making it I had to rely on either memory or my taste buds thanks to the internet being down.

Cake

3 eggs
3/4 cup sugar
1 cup cake flour (shift the flour before measuring)
2 tbsp melted butter
(4 tsp chocolate powder)

Frosting

3/4 cups instant coffee
1 1/2 pkgs of cream cheese
1/4 cup vanilla yogurt
1/2 powderd sugar
(Dark chocolate bar)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees and line a 7" cake pan with parchment/wax paper.
Mix the sugar with the eggs until combined. In a larger bowl of hot water (around 170 degrees), beat the eggs with a hand mixer until it doubled in size. When the eggs are warm to the touch, take it out of the water and continue beating on high until you can draw ribbons for at least 3 seconds.
Mix in the the chocolate powder with the flour if using, then shift it into the batter. Swiftly fold into the batter and don't worry if it's not fully combined. Then fold in the butter until the batter is uniform and smooth. Try not to mix too much.
Pour the batter into the cake pan and drop a couple of times to break any air bubbles. Bake for 30 minutes or until it comes out clean. Drop the pan again once out of the oven to prevent shrinking (apparently, I don't think it really works).
As for the frosting, just mix everything together. I also melted half of a chocolate bar and poured ribbons on top on the frosting, popped it in the freezer for a while, then broke it up to make "chips".

I decorated the whole thing with fondant, which was just a bag of marshmallows, with a bunch of powdered sugar mixed in to make it dough-like. And I piped those words in dark chocolate.

Once I saw how heartbroken my dad would've been after finding out the cake was a lie, when I got back from delivery, I whipped up a completely new cake. The only problem is is that there's barely anything in the fridge I could use to make the cake look semi-fancy. I had some cherries, half a tub of yoghurt, and some extra dark chocolate at my disposal though, and scrapped something up.

I took the remainder of the vanilla Greek yoghurt I had and mixed it with chopped cherries and some powdered sugar and allowed that to chill in the fridge before spreading between the cake slices. I also made a kind of dark chocolate ganache with milk instead of cream to use to top off the dessert.

And for a dessert I just made on a whim with limited resources, I guess it didn't turn out bad. The cake is a little dry, but genoise is like that. Then again, how should I know for certain? Someone ate my share of cake too.

Now my mom wants me to make her a cake on her birthday, but I really don't think that's a great idea.

Fanart: Anime Revolution's Mascot

Last weekend I attended Cos & Effect, which is pretty much a stand in for the lack of Anime Evolution (our native yearly con) this year. Being something scrapped up from AE's ashes, it wasn't so bad. Smaller, yes, and there wasn't nearly as many memorable events nor things to buy, but I got my yearly anime con fix so I'm content (times three, actually, because there were three anime related events this year).

Anyways, I remember while watching the C&E Idol, the MC mentioned that he’s going to be the MC for Idol for Anime Revolution next year. So maybe what people said about “starting a new con under a different name” thing was true, because the name is just too similar to ignore. However, on the page, it clearly says it’s “not Anime Evolution”. Though at this point, nothing is set in stone. They don't even have a venue as of yet.

They released a new mascot like... yesterday, which is pretty much a recoloured version of this picture of Tomo from Azumanga Daioh. It now replaces where said picture used to be on the logo. I thought I'd show some support by drawing some fanart of the currently unnamed mascot and trying to make it deviate away from looking like a ripoff.

Fail Cakes

IT WAS SO BEAUTIFUL BEFORE IT DIED.

You can kind of see how it dying, though.

Note to self: make space in the freezer BEFORE putting a cake into it.

It was a good thing I even have pictures of it before the incident. One side of the mango-pudding layer (seen above) was beginning to crack, so I cut that chunk off and ate it. Then I saw the other sides were begging to crack and slide off, which is when I ran to get my camera. I don't think the cake itself turned out horrible, it just what happened to it after that made it fail. I don't want to explain the accident, because it's a tragic one indeed, but lets just say that most of the pudding and whipped cream ended up in the freezer than on people's plates.

Two days of work gone in just three seconds. I seriously wanted to cry afterwards if my cousin wasn't there. :(
(I knew the cake not rising was a bad sign.)

I don't know how much you people would like to make this cake, though, because I don't think it turned out properly. Alas...

Mango Mandarin Pudding Green Tea Cake

Green Tea Sponge Cake
(Stolen from here.)

3 eggs
1 cup cake flour, shifted
1/2 cup sugar
2 tbsp melted butter
1 teaspoon honey
2 teaspoon matcha

Mango Mandarin Pudding

1/4 can mango pulp
1 cup mandarin juice
1 cup hot water
125 g half and half
2 pkgs gelatin

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Using a hand mixer, beat the eggs and sugar over a bowl of hot water (ideally around 170 degrees) until frothy and doubled in size. Remove from the hot water once the eggs are warm enough to touch. Add honey and continue beating until you can draw a ribbon which will last for 3 seconds.
Combine matcha and flour together and shift into the bowl. Fold the it into the eggs until combined, then fold in the butter until smooth (around 30 folds). Try not to mix too much or it'll prevent the cake from rising.
Pour into baking pan and drop it a couple of times on the counter to break any air bubbles. Bake for 30 minutes or until you can insert a skewer and it comes out clean.
For the pudding, first dissolve the gelatin in the hot water. Then stir in everything else and let it set in the fridge for an hour or two before pouring on top of cake. Afterwards, allow the whole thing to set overnight.
Decorate with whipped cream (or stars cut out from mangos like I did).

UGH, IT WAS SO BEAUTIFUL. I couldn't even enjoy eating it because I was so heartbroken.

But that's not the only cake I made this week! Behold, my banana bread (my mom refers to it as a banana cake so close enough).

It's fail because it's under baked and it came all congealed on the bottom. But the top part was delicious.

Got the recipe from here. Kept everything pretty much the same except I substituted the butter for greek yogurt, and I added almonds. Yogurt was a good idea, almonds not so much.

I don't it doesn't look like it, but he's based off Skyward Sword. He could probably pass off as Ordon Link too, but in Ordon he doesn't have a sword... I think. Both of those outfits look simular to me, but it's probably because it's in the same colour palette and has the same waist band thing.

Anyways, did it in a similar style to my Skyward Sword Zelda picture. I chose these colours because in his official art, it's mainly green, blue, and yellow.

He looks more mature than he needs to be. Meh.
And don't even get me started on the anatomy. I know it's bad... just go away. Admire the shading for a while.

Fanart: Powerpuff Girls Edo-fied

Sugar, spice, and everything nice...

The Powerpuff Girls movie was playing a couple of days ago, followed by The Powerpuff Girls Rule! (which is an extra episode made for the 10th anniversary in 2009). Been a while since I've watched the trio saving Townsville on TV, even though I have the movie on VHS (yeah yeah old school). You may or may not know this, but as a kid I was a huge ass fan of them. I have this huge stack of fanart I did around that time lying somewhere around the house. I was considering of just drawing them in my style, but I figured I might as well pay tribute to the grade 3 me and to prove that I've still got it.

Their outfits are a simplified version of the Edo ver. of themselves the PPGZ crew meet in that one episode where there's that crossover with traditional PPG - not that I know because I'll never watch that blasphemy (even though I've done fanart for it before). I figured I might as well make it a bit more interesting for me. You might've noticed that Bubble's hair is the only one which is different, because Blossom's was pretty much the same, and who would Buttercup be without her... I don't know what you'd call it. Without her hair.

Something simple. More of a filter test than anything.

Request: OC Refs

You know I'm always down with requests from friends, right? So long as they're not exploiting me, claiming it's their artwork, or anything else despicable, I have no problems cranking out a picture or two. In fact, if I know you, dear reader, enough and you asked, I'd probably say yes.

But anyways, a friend asked me for a picture not too long ago for her OC. All I had was a description to work off of. That's good for the artistic freedom, bad because it's always easier to look at an arm than be told how it looks like. It helps than her ghost form was pretty much a tweaked version of Miku Append (who can be thought of as Miku ver. 2).

My initial sketches of the characters:

But when I showed it to my friend, I found out that the character is supposed to be 14. Obviously, what I drew didn't resemble a 14 year old so after some convincing that I was fine with redoing it (the sketch didn't take that long to do anyways), it was back to the drawing board.

Luckily, my friend wasn't some assholey-client and I got the okay for the second sketch. And it was smooth sailing from there.

No shading because I figured it was a ref and in refs, usually just solid colours are used. I think I only highlighted the hair, eyes, and the lips. Fine with me. Probably easiest colouring job I've done because my lineart was nice enough for once just to use the magic wand tool to do all the work for me. That and my friend gave me the hex codes for her eyes and hair.

Such a shame that a lot of detail I put into the ghost girl's outfit is lost either due to shrinking the picture to half its size after I was done (a little tip if you want to make smooth and thin lineart easily) or the grey being too dark for the lines to appear properly (since most of it was focused on the belt).

Fresh from the oven. Looks like one's already been devoured.

Made them in the spur of the moment yesterday, with my mom pushing me to make it because it was "healthy" Plus, we didn't need to buy anything as everything we needed were readily available. It was like 9 at night when I made them. I don't know why I had to make them, though, since it was my mom who saw the recipe in the newspaper and all (and I would have much preferred baking a cake instead).

Blueberry White Chocolate Swirls
From the Vancouver Sun
(There's also an additional lemon glaze that comes with it but we opted to go without it because it's "too fattening".)

2 cup flour
1 tbsp sugar
1 tbsp baking powder
1 cup blueberries
1/4 tsp salt
3/4 cup milk
1/4 oil
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 cup white chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenhiet.
Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. In a separate bowl, combine milk and oil. Add wet mixture to dry.
Sprinkle flour onto the work surface and roll out dough into a rectangle. Press blueberries and white chocolate chips into the dough, and roll it up to make the swirl pattern.
Cut into 8 - 9 pieces and bake for 25 - 30 minutes.

I guess they were pretty good, considering they're all gone now, haha.

Zelda's Skyward Sword reincarnation

Even though there isn't a clear release date yet (other than "the holiday season" according to Nintendo at E3), I've already preordered a copy of Skyward Sword. Yeah, I didn't know it was possible until my sister told me one of her friends did it. It also helped that it was on sale on preorders for E3 games, and Skyward Sword just happened to be one of them.

Well, being a Zelda fan, I'm excited. I didn't know there was already all this stuff released about the characters and the world so I spent my sleeping time seeing what I had missed out on. I really hope that it's true that the graphics would be upgraded before the final release of the game. I know it's not going to look like Twilight Princess, but I wish there could be another game in that style. Maybe for the Wii U?

I-Should-Have-Been-Taking-Notes 7.3: Psychology

I'm updating my blog when I should be cleaning my room, especially since there's a bunch of stuff on the floor which makes it difficult to enter my room without stepping on mounds of paper. My priorities are in the right place.
But seriously, I had scanned these in a while ago, after emptying out my school binders. I've been meaning to upload them, but laziness is always pulling me away. That and other obligations, but they're usually aren't all that important, like cleaning my room for example.

So why does psychology get it's own post? Is it because I drew the most pictures during that subject? Is it because the teacher would sometimes start the class off with asking us to draw stuff on a sheet of paper? Or is it because the pictures here are particularity kick ass because I coloured them in with crayons my teacher provided? Well, the answer is all of the above, and with that, I'll start.

Recipe: Chicken Teriyaki

The "LOL presentation" bowl of left over chicken that couldn't fit so beautifully on the plate.

Naw, I don't really have a recipe for you, or at least the one I made today anyways. I didn't measure anything at all, and coming from a person who still doesn't know how much a pound is in relation to something or how approximately a meter is, you should be afraid.

But since the title promised a recipe for you in the title, even though I discreetly said I wouldn't, I'll summarize what I did. Basically, I deboned eight chicken thighs into filets after finding out cutting through bones to make chunks (I called them "nublets" in my head... don't ask why) or cutting them into chunks in general even with the bone removed was too difficult. I then marinated it in equal parts soy sauce, mirin, brown sugar, and about four parts water. I even threw in a smashed tangerine slice to add that acidic kick I don't think really did anything in the end. After that, I put on the blue apron I made in home ec 8, pan fried everything, and when it was nearly cooked, poured in teriyaki sauce (equal parts mirin, soy sauce, brown sugar, half a part ginger juice) in a pan and let that reduce for about a minute. Oh, I flipped the chicken, too, halfway, and threw some green onions on top while it was reducing. I guess that's kind of important too.
And if you don't trust me, you can always trust the internets because I trust them more than I do myself too.

And why am I so excited over this so much? Because it turned out good when the last time I cooked any meat lead to something so horribly undercooked that I called my friends telling them I might die the following day. Over dramatic? Well, you didn't see my meat.

Now it's on rice. The difference.

My sister gave me an "I approve" so I guess that's good, right? After all the chicken had been eaten, my dad took the sauce-laden dishes so he could salvage the rest as a topping for rice. He even told me I should make more dishes. Booyah. Slowly, but surely, I will one day get rid of this "I cooked something - BEWARE" title I have hovering over me.

Let's start off with something from today.

Bleh. Nothing about this picture leaves me proud enough to keep on opening the picture to look at it.

The filename is "Maya" but I don't really have a name for her. She's an OC from the good ol days, but one I never really expanded on because her only purpose was to suddenly appear and cause drama in the protags' lives. She's not really an angel either, she's just dead. The dress she's wearing also looks very familiar, like I've seen it from somewhere.

I think the whole purpose of making this was to find a quick, "sellable" style that would be appropriate for commissions and prints and the like. Something a bit neater than my freehand painterly one I have already. Haven't found it yet. Back to surfing through the internet, ~~stealing~~ finding inspiration from other people.

...and now for things I didn't do today.

Another enviro study. Haven't done these in a while. The clouds/sky actually don't look so bad, especially the big one in the left-hand corner. But then it gets all crappy once you look down from there so just pretend that part doesn't exist.

If I were to explain the inspiration for this, I could probably pass it off as something artistic or that I knew what I was doing and generally leave you all impressed by my knowledge of fine art. But since it turned out so "wtf" that even slapping on the label of abstract wouldn't save it, I won't. Frankly, I don't even know what the heck that's supposed to be anymore.

My tablet wouldn't respond to pressure sensitivity. It was awful.

Harvey Moiseiwitsch Volodarskii

Been a while since I've done one these messy, ~~one day~~ couple-'o-hours head shots, right? I've been trying to avoid 'em because I'm not really improving all that much by doing 'em, but I guess you can argue that I'm not really improving all that much by drawing naked people either. At least the latter looks more impressive. Anywho, we're talking about headshots. Yeah, I made one today.

"It's showtime!"

Okay, background time. Volodarskii is a Russian (?) magician by day, and an assassin by night (or whenever he's called to do his assassin job). He wields two weak beam katanas - and I'm sorry everyone for how lame that sounds but I didn't make this up - but it's really when he flips everything upside down when you start getting screwed over. Did I also mention he's from No More Heroes? I guess that's kind of important to know, too.

I love his theme, too.

It's such a shame that he's looked over in the game because he's not a girl and he was kind of easy to defeat. But look at his name. His name. (Plus, he's ranked fourth, so in theory, he shouldn't have been that easy.)

After a year of on and off (mainly off) work, I've finally finished it: my tribute to Luka's signature song.

Yes, I think I started this back when I just finished my Korean Hello Kitty bride one last year. Yeah, that's long, but in my defense, maybe if stupid Windows Update didn't restart my computer on me I would've finished earlier. Sure, I could've just saved the WIP before hand, but how many of you remember to safety save, anyways?

Well, what do you think about the resemblance?

My god are his pants bad. And his shirt. And pretty much everything about the boy because he's rushed. Luka was completed about a year back, or at least her hair was anyways. I think she looks way way better, but maybe it's because she's more colourful than her monochrome counterpart.
But you know what really steals the show? The balloon. Like man, you don't know how proud of it I am. It came out looking so good. Sure, it looks pretty bad in a dark background, but in a lighter one it's not so bad. I should've animated it because it looks so awesome, but that would also mean I need to add in blinking animations, which isn't cool, especially since there's two people.

And the JBF sign looks like poopie. Don't look at it. I just didn't have the heart to remove it because it took me so long to do.

Recipe: Whhite Chocolate Raspberry Cheesecake (&& BONUS Parfait)

Ugly angle.

LOOKS DELICIOUS.

There's like huge fissures on the top of the cake. It kind of looks like the raspberry jam evaporated out, leaving just an imprint, which facilitated further cracking. At least when covered in the top layer of jam, it evens it out pretty well. Being a translucent topping, you can still see the shadow of the crevice, but that's what additional toppings are for.

But, aesthetics matter not because this thing tastes awesome. Okay, maybe I'm jumping the gun a little, the cake still residing happily in the fridge, but the residue left from the sides of the pan tasted awesome anyways.

I feel kind of bad for putting these recipes up, because it's suggesting as if I came up with it. No, I just modified one I found via Google (through the help of helpful commenter, of course!)

White Chocolate Raspberry Swirl CheesecakeFor a 9" pan. (Since I only had a 6", I halved the recipe when I made it.)

2 cups Oreos
1/4 cup melted butter
1 tbsp sugar
6 tbsp seedless raspberry jam
2 cups white chocolate chips
1/2 cup half and half
3 pkgs room temp cream cheese
3 eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 cup sugar

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Line the bottom of the cake pan with wax paper.
To make the crust, crush the Oreos, along with the filling, until they're crumbs. Add in the butter and sugar, and press it into the bottom of the pan.
Put chocolate chips and half and half in a metal bowl. Place the bowl over a pot of simmering water (or use a double boiler, if you have one), and mix until smooth. Let it cool until it's lukewarm.
Mix the cream cheese until smooth. Combine with sugar. Add eggs one at a time. Finish with vanilla extract and chocolate chip mixture.
Microwave the raspberry jam until runny, and let it cool for a while before using. Pour in half of the cake batter in the pan, and drizzle 3 tbsp on top. Repeat with the rest of batter and jam. Run a knife through the cheese cake to create marble effect.
Wrap the bottom of the pan in tin foil (if using a pan with removable bottom) and place on jelly roll pan and place in oven. Fill the jelly roll pan with hot water. Bake for 55 - 60 minutes, or until filling has set. If water evaporates, add more. Once finished baking, turn off the oven, and leave it in there for another hour.
Cool, then cover the top with plastic wrap and chill in the fridge for 8 hours. Top the cake with the rest of the jam.

In my mass produced ones, my mom bought some whipping cream, so we topped every one of them with a serving of that. I think I might be improving with the pastry bag.

Lets start off with something completely from my head, something I haven't done in a while: an outfit post.

Granted, I wasn't really wearing that today. Because I didn't go out, I was just in my plain ol' oversized t-shirt bearing the symbol of a Guide camp I went to (yeah, it's one of those t-shirts). I figured that was boring, so here's something I wore a while back. Enjoy the picture because it's the only decent looking thing to follow.
Used Photoshop instead of my usual SAI/openCanvas. I do enjoy doing these kind of quick doodles on PS a lot more because the lines are bit thicker and sharper.

While I was already on the program, thought I'd do my enviro on it too. Unlike oC and SAI, PS has textured brushes. I really wanted to be good at using 'em. It didn't save how horrible the enviro came out though, but that should've been expected by now.

Note to self: colour in the background first instead of doing the foreground and then doing the background around it.

I hate shrubbery. Takes forever to do and it looks like crap.

I feel motivated. Since it's summer, and I've got nothing better to do, I guess I'll try improving on my art. Doesn't sound that hard, right? Just two months to become pro. Nothing difficult.

But like any person who wishes to get better, their starting work is gonna suck. I'm no exception.

Alright, lets start off with a really old sketch, shall we?

Venezula AKA Viza

Something I had rolling around in my head for a while. Figured I would document this character design so it seems like I've been doing something nowadays. (Seriously, I haven't drawn a thing in ages.)
Anyways, onto a short bio: she's an Italian born Spanish girl who, I guess, likes beaches, which is the reason behind the swimsuit-esque outfit. She uses an ice pick - because I heard the Mafia uses them - as well as brass knuckles (which, in her case, probably isn't made out of brass). And I like big sunglasses, but I'm a little "eeh" on the hat.
By the way, I don't recommend that you Google "ice pick" with your mature filter off, especially when you're looking for pictures. Just like Googling "cougar".

Yup, it's the only impressive thing I ever made in art! An actual, painted board that's ready to be hung up in my room somewhere (more-so than the one still lying next to my wall, unfinished).
I don't know what inspired me to make this. I think I just wanted to draw some stupid, so I made a vegetable parade. Then I got the idea of making them walk on a rainbow road.
...aaand I forgot to put strings on the eggplant's banjo. There's also something else I messed up on, but I'll let you figure out as to what that is yourself.

Recipe: Flan

You like eating? Well, no shit you do. But someone's gotta make it, right? I've been making some stuff recently, so I thought I'd share some food pics and recipes for once because that's helluva more interesting than my doodles.

First, what I endeavored to make today: flan. Sounds like something you'd find in porridge, but looks more like creme caramel. And also very popular with the animus.

I pretty much tried to make this:

But 100x less cute.

Nah, mine's looked like this.

Sides came out a little uneven, probably from the water boiling a little when I steamed the flan. And I think I should've caramelized the sauce a little darker, but I don't like the burnt taste homemade caramel gives off. And I think the pudding could've been a little sweeter, but the texture was smooth so it's all good.

Recipe's really simple. All you need is:

9 tbsp sugar
1 tbsp water
250 mL milk
2 eggs

And that shit makes four flans right there. I could tell you the recipe, too, but Cooking With Dog does a better job.

Except, this time, it wasn't a contest so I was guaranteed to get it.

The picture's self explanatory as to what it's for. As for the usage, it's supposed to be a place mat. Regardless of it going to be stained and signed on by grads, I still put some effort into making the colouring at least look passable.

It was the same person who judged the agenda covers who also took care of the placemats, except this time, she actually liked what we did.

It's actually a collab with a friend. Since I have no originality for these things, and she outlined the Japan Day poster I never uploaded onto here, she drew it and I coloured and tweaked a couple of things in PS. I also added all the random copyrighted things around the picture, including Ronald McDonald's head (which was heavily supported by my sister, albeit smaller than she wanted). I think there were some issues with the whole copyrighted thing, though, but when I told my art teacher that I could change it, he was like "I wouldn't." So there it'll stay.

A couple of days ago, my art teacher handed us the very first copies of the place mat. Looks pretty good, especially since I made the sure the picture was big enough to print out onto that size properly without looking pixelly and ugly. The wood didn't turn out so good, though, but I purposely put a filter on it that made it kind of grainy. Oh well, that's not the focus of the picture anyways.

EDIT: Okay, I wrote this before the winners were announced. You do not want to know who won (though all the entries - save like three - were all hilariously bad. I'm not mean enough to display them here, though.

Annually, my school would hold a contest for the next year's agenda cover. Two years ago, I made something, but forgot to hand it in. Instead of getting something relevant to our school and mascots, instead, we got this ugly-ass compilation of someone's portraits of random people, arranged on a blue background, with the school name printed in some cookie-cutter 3D word art I used to make all my titles in as a kid. Not saying that the portraits were bad - no, they were fine - but what do Twilight people have to do with my school (other than asking if they could use the school to film the high school scenes in Breaking Dawn), or Michael Phelps for that matter? Seriously, everyone I showed it to laughed. I vowed to submit my entry next year.
But then next year came, they pulled a dick move and changed the contest regulations that we all knew and loved. So now we're not allowed to use our school mascots or emblems, but instead focus on our motto of the year, "Killarney Cares". Lame. We ended up with a pencil crayon picture of stick people encircling the school. Better than last year, and we actually got to vote for it this time. Second place was a cover consisted of two stick people with our school name underneath it.

Anyways, end of tl;dr. What you needed to take from that is when I didn't submit something, something worse became the cover. No, not this year, dammit! It's a good thing we got use cougars and shamrocks again.

Should've stayed in pottery class

Boring backstory: I was assigned to work at a ceramics studio at school not too long ago. And even though I call it a ceramics studio, it's not a place where they make anything, per se. The premise is is that they'll offer blank pieces, and pretty much, the customer comes in and gets to decorate the piece they choose. Because of this, the week I was assigned there was easy as hell because I virtually had to do nothing. Plus, it was the week right after spring break, which is always a slow time. Plus plus, it was in a shopping center which offered Wifi so guess what I was doing most of the time there with the assistance of my iPod?
My employer makes everyone who works there make their own piece to get the idea of everything. So I did.

Yup, the problem I see most people encounter when they're doing a piece. The glaze is all opaque when you slather it on initially, giving the impression that it'll be that opaque after firing too. So you forget that you need a lot of layers in order for it to give the nice, deep colour you want. And that's what happened to my piece too. Sigh.
At least I remembered that the glaze comes out a lot darker than what it looks like on your piece. And it's really shiny when it comes out.

Other than that, I think it turned out alright, especially for my first piece. It's a nice plate regardless, one I wouldn't mind eating off of, haha. But first, I've got to wash it.

Oh, and guess what else? The plate is a value of $32 dollars. I got it for a total of 0.

But that's not the only thing I made.

Can I you guess what it is? I can tell you what it isn't: a dog or a Pokemon, especially not Shaymin.
It's supposed to be a deer. Just a deer. Period.

Yeah, did something a little simpler than the one above, because I started this one on the last day I was assigned there. I like how this one turned out a lot more than the one above, but since I kept the design more minimalistic, that's not a surprise.
The back for this one is a speckled black, which I think looks great.

Man, after my week there, I've got some respect for the people who work around kilns. Taking things out of that thing is nerve racking, especially when it's too high for you, everything's heavy, and everything can break.

This is what happens when you don't properly read the rules and thus didn't see the part where the things you submit have to have the intention of being sold. Too bad I already drew this dude out, and spent a long time doing it!
Actually brought my sketchbook along to "work" (or really, career prep) as we hardly get any customers anyway. Whipped this up in one day and still tended to the people who were there. Got a lot of compliments for him, too.
I don't really like him, though. I need a reference desperately because I bullshitted my way through his muscles. Ugh.

This is actually a really old-ass picture I probably drew around summer. Even though it has nothing to do with anime at all, I figured it looked fantasy enough for someone to think it was from small, unknown game.

Alright, as you may or may not know, last year I was fortunate enough to be part of Artist Alley in our city's annual con, Anime Evolution. This year, there wouldn't be one, but there are some smaller events happening, all of which offer an Artist Alley type thing.

August 13 - 14
Our current replacement for Anime Evolution. Since I don't have Facebook, and it doesn't have a proper website, I don't have much information on this. All I know is that there's going to be an Artist Alley consisting of 25 tables. They'll be accepting applicants on a skill level basis, which means lulzy crappy artists would be weeded out. I don't know if I'll be one of those rejected, however. In any case, deadline for applications are soon so I'll need to start working on some impressive stuff.

From the description, this is more artist market oriented. I think you'll also need to submit work for them to judge, but I think it'll be more lenient, and perhaps leaning more on the "first come first serve" basis. Coincidentally, both events are held in the same university as last year's Anime Evolution was held.

Project: MoV Graphic Novel Part 3 - Ze Actual Thing

...and, without furthur ado, here's actual comic.

The pages are black and white because I sent the pages to another guy who printed them out and coloured it like that. That's why only the cover has colour because I was in charge of printing that out (and I was shit scared that my colour printer, which was already running out of yellow ink, wouldn't make it).
Also, over half of them have words because at first, I was putting the text in myself. For the rest of it, I got another guy to do it. Like you'll understand it with or without text, though.

And yes, I found the Looney Toons part kind of... just thrown in for the hell of it. I do have to say that I did a good job (at least in some parts) of making them look like who they're supposed to be.

Oh yeah, I forgot that people read left to right in America. Woops.

Unfortunately, the rest of the colouring was not as kick ass as this.

I actually like how Sylvestor looks here, standing there all stupid like.

Granted, I did hog a lot of work, lol. But that's because drawing's my forte.

Project: MoV Graphic Novel Part 2 - Character Concepts

So, I think I may have just over planned my graphic novel here. I knew I wanted to stray away from my usual anime style, and since - predictably - finding out that it's going to be a funny comic, found it not very befitting either. Thus, I tried to make up a style that's more American cartoon-ny, and here are the results.

P.S. Mainly these pictures are of Portia because I'm sexist like that.

First initial sketch to just get me in the mood for it. I kept a lot of the features on Portia more or less the same, though (the slanted eyes, for example).

Man, if only I had found these sooner! I couldn't made them for one of my two friends who graduated last year. But as of now, the only person graduating soon is me. So I guess it's a graduation gift to myself, haha?

What's cool about it is that there's a male and female versions, and both have a change of robe colour and the scroll be a bouquet or something. I chose the generic female one as I'm not a dude.

The owl is also intended to have a message on the yellow/green paper disc its standing on.

More dip pen tests

So, it'll probably be a while before I end up posting for the month so here's a belated haul post thinger-ma-jigger.

Finally got a proper caligraphy ink set to go with my dip pen set.

Silver, black, white, and gold ink.

Don't you love the backdrop of the math homework I should be doing now but is instead writing this? Yeah yeah.

Oh, and can you guess what this is?

I'll give you a hint: it makes the big bottle I bought not too long ago a big waste.

They're even the same brand as the nibs, Speedball, too, so I know they should work fine with them.

And fine they did:

Ink tests

Holy shit man. If you actually bothered to read the ~~writing~~ chicken scratch, you'd see that I spent a considerable amount of time ranting about how awesome the black ink was. Also found a new favourite nib. Amazing what proper ink can do, right?
As for the other colours, the chunks of glitter in the gold and silver ink produced an overly thick and heavy line for me. Plus, combining the ink with smaller nibs makes the line too transparent and not glittery enough. I have no choice but to stick with the bigger ones. Oh well. Still beats using marker ink instead.
And, I probably don't need to say it, but I also tested the white ink out there, but being white, you can't see it.

What else is cool is that, unlike Sakura Pigma pens or something, this stuff is permanent when it dries. You can actually feel the texture, man. It dries 3D.

A week of dressing up

It's funny because we already had a grad spirit week, and now we just had another. I guess it's because this year our grad particularly sucks due to them opting to replace the cool grad events (like Winter Formal) with stupid stuff like movie nights and bowling - which, by the way, no one goes to nor remembers.

Anyways, I don't like sharing my identity so here's a picture journal of what I wore during spirit week.

Monday - Nerd Day

Pretty much half of the things I wore that day isn't mine! Including the 3D glasses, which I took from my sister, who took it from the theater. I must say, seeing everything framed by thick black boxes was weird. But I'm not a nerd without my glasses.

Man, some guys had it easy. They already were the image of the stereotypical nerd so they didn't need to dress up at all! (*coughSeadoncough*)

Tuesday - Hardcore Punk/Goth Day

Goth/Punk Day

Initially, I was tentative about doing this day because I had volunteering with children right afterwards. But since I pretty much dressed up as a goth every year for Halloween, this was really easy for me. It's the only day of the year I put makeup on, too. Today was no exception. Hooray for lots of black eyeshadow and eyeliner and - my favourite - black lipstick.
Oh, and yeah, I just went with it. I just wiped off all the black lipstick before I went to see them. They still commented on my freaky looking eyes, though. If they thought I was freaky, I wonder what people thought of me as I walked around Value Village.

I let my friend borrow my cross choker as I figured I'd end up taking it off during the day anyways. As a result, my clothes didn't reflect any gothic-ness at all. Which I guess is fine, because the lipstick does the trick. Also, it's good I didn't look overtly gothic because I was the only one who bothered to dress up in many of my classes. Awkward.

I got to do someone's makeup that day, too. Kind of weird putting on eyeliner for someone else, especially when that someone else is a dude.

Wednesday - Superhero/Sidekick/Villian Day

So I mentioned earlier that I went to Value Village, right? The whole purpose of that was trying to find something for Superhero day. I cycled through a lot of ideas, Supergirl being one of them. I even considered being Bubbles from Powerpuff Girls, as the only dresses I have are blue, but no one would get who I was without bringing my Bubbles plushie I have.

Didn't see many people dress up for this day either. Predictable.

Should've just taped a Superman symbol on my shirt, though.

Thursday - Genderbender Day

So that hoodie I foolish ordered in extra larger finally comes to use. And people laughed at me.

Lots of funny reactions for me today, mainly compliments for my facial hair. When I walked in to English, my teacher was like "WHOA". I got a "who are you" by another guy, and my Bio teacher almost didn't recognize me - again. And when I was walking home, my mom was driving on the road and saw me, and began to wonder who I was. She really thought I was a dude before realizing it was me all along.
I didn't think I looked that much like a guy! I clearly looked like a girl trying to be one.

What's sad is that I saw a ton of girls dressed up as dudes. As one of my classmates puts it, "Girls just have to dress crappy and put a hat on!" I've always thought guys had it easier, because all they needed to do was put on a dress. Guys didn't really have male-specific clothes. But in any case, it was a disappointment to only see four drag queens. Sigh.

I don't understand how people can walk around with jeans that fall down to their mid-thigh. I can't even go half of that without having to pull them back up again because I didn't want my underwear to show.

Hate the backpack I was using though. For the past couple of days, it would rain in the mornings and suddenly become sunny. I took my chances and hoped it was going to be one of those days, because Friday is my walking home day. I couldn't fit an umbrella into that stupid bag of mines, let alone my lunch and textbooks so if it was still raining after school, I was screwed.

I bet no one saw the Tinkerbell on my shirt, either. Hell, I didn't even notice there was one until after I had bought it.

Productive today when I got home

Uncharacteristically felt like drawing todays when I got back home.
So I did.

It's a shame how I don't wear my Skullcandy headphones too often. I just threw them on today for the same of it being pink day (even though I barely wore any pink; better than the guys who just pinned pink slips of paper instead though).
I spent way too long drawing this than I should have.

And I don't know why my hair isn't black in this picture. Close enough?
