First post of the year!

Sketch of a guy
Last art related thing I’m doing before I hit the hay. Spent all my free time today basically on my computer, scribbling away, and now it's 3 am, and I'm still on my computer.

This is what I get for procrastinating - yet again - on con stuff.

It doesn't look so bad from afar

Ignis from Jingai Makyou
Event File.

Was intended to be a speed paint, but then I started to spent more time than I wanted to working on the face. I just gave up on everything below the face though. Clearly, I've been using outlines to compensate for my lack of knowledge in form, colouring, shading, etc.

I also broke away from my dependent use of the pencil tool and used the watercolour tools for use. I hate how it blends all the colours together, but I don't like having to use the blur tool even more. But I did not break my habit of avoiding backgrounds. Woot.

Anyways, it's been a while since I've done fanart of Ignis - or fanart at all really.

I hate Sai's brushes a little less now

Headshot of an unnamed character

Redesigned him so the poor guy doesn't have to lug 50  pounds of armor around
Redesigned one of my OCs, and then somewhere along the lines also ended up drawing a headshot of another OC from the same world. I thought my male OC's personality didn't really fit a wardrobe of heavy, bulky armor pieces, so I lightened him up and made him more like a thief.

...a thief with a big-ass sword. Obviously, it's not pictured.

He'll probably go through some more redesigns in the future, because I'm not loving it completely yet.

More stuff I wear

Dressed up like a guy for a friend's project, though it was a bit excessive because I just sat behind a newspaper. I'm holding coffee because I was able to score a free one.

It was raining, sunny, and snowing all at once not too long ago.
This particular day, it was windy as heck.

Review-ish: SketchBook Copic Edition

Testing out SketchBook Copic Edition
While I was surfing Tumblr, I saw that SketchBook released a Copic Edition. Since I've got a thing with trying out new painting software, this was totally up my alley. Best of it, the program was free for a limited time and available for download off the Copic website.

I actually found it to be difficult to use due to the interface. It required a lot of holding and dragging, as opposed to just straight out clicking. I suppose it makes sense for tablet users - SketchBook being an app - but not so much for the desktop versions. I just found out now how to move layers up and down.
SketchBook Copic Editon interface
That aside, how about the important stuff like the brushes? Did I find them similar to Copics? I suppose, but it simulated all the stuff I didn't like about markers. One of which is the streakiness especially apparent from using chisel nibs. I hear that it's suppose to imitate the seven layers Copics need to achieve a nice saturated colour (something I've never heard about or noticed considering I own these markers). I'm not too much of a fan of the blurriness the brush nib gives when you press down on the tablet.
Did I mention I also really really dislike the Multiliner brush they have? It's too light, and resembles the lightness you would get if you erased over fineliner ink - one of the things I hated about doing lineart.

The palette is also very limited to 72 Copic colours, most of which are greys and peaches. I persoanlly don't mind being limited because it challenges me to be creative with layering colours to achieve a look a desire, something I already do have to face when using Copics traditionally.

Overall, the program's not bad. Not great either, but I can see how people would think it looks like Copics. I'll try to play around with it some more.

The frustration of having to relearn a new interface and my now ranging desire to draw lead me to switch to more familiar territory to satisfy my craving.
Derping around with openCanvas' watercolour brush. I never remembered it to be this nice. I quite like the way I coloured the sketch. I'll probably use the technique more for future reference.

Project: Luka Drafts

Drafts for my comic project. It's based of Luka by Suzanne Vega, which is basically a song about a girl shrugging off the fact that she is abused.

Now the alternative story. These pictures were supposed to appear when you hovered over the original story. It's supposed to depict Luka's ordeal the night before the story started, as well as reveal what really happened. Originally, I was going to integrate these scenes into the story linearly, but taking to the account that the theme of hiding and wanting to do something "different", I chose this gimmick instead.
And I don't think I've posted this yet, so I'll post it now:

Daybreak

Event File

I really did the picture so I can practice environments. I think the trees look alright, but everything else is pretty terrible, but I guess from far away, it's acceptable.
At least the colours are pretty. I forget the importance of a background too often. Maybe that's why my art has been so bland.

Guy lying on a girl
I’m usually never this neat with my sketches, or at least, I never bother to be. I realized that I didn't have enough pictures of couples - as in just two people - interacting with one another.
The girl’s supposed to be under a blanket by the way.

Just avoiding doing a formal character ref

And instead, let me just spam you with some pictures of said character until I get the motivation to do one.

Probably will need to test out some more colour combos and design options before I settle on something, but this is what I first had in mind for her.
...now in a tengu mask.

More sketches of Kanaria. Mainly revamps of older designs as I am not original.

I would post sketches more frequently, but scanning is such a hassle

Figure drawings, and my fursona just chillin with the humans.
Throwing around some ideas for new pet redesigns. I can't design animals to save my life...
openCanvas-tan? She has a ridiculous amount of pieces on her.
Some revamped designs for my oCs, mainly being Kanaria. Looks like she's gonna have a 2012 incarnation.

Legend of QQ

I freaking love Kikwis
I know, I know. If the Link Kikwi wasn't there, you would just be like "Why is there a Kikwi with a flower on it's head?" But I wanted to keep it simple, and Zelda has too many things in her design that would've taken that away.

That aside...

Oh my god, I love Kikwis. They're so adorabibibile. Like when I first met Matchi, I wanted to steal it. When Oolo went up to the sky, not only was a super amused of it being carried by the Scrapper, I was super excited to have the cuteness of the Kikwis super close and convienant, and not have me run around Faron Woods looking for 'em. (Have some of them disappeared after the water drained out? I can't seem to find some of them.) Man, why couldn't I have carried Matchi on my back. I would've gladly offered, as opposed to having someone like Princess Ruto force her way on me.

Just imagine how awesome Legend of QQ would be. Link, all duked out with his Deku Stick and leaf shield, plopping around Faron Woods, searching for Zelda. Except, you'll never get to use your Deku Stick, because 90% of the time, you'll be crawling around on all fours. Just think Metal Gear Solid, but instead of a box you've got the bush on your back.

I'd buy it.

Lets have a round of fanarts up in here

Started off as fanart... kind of, but I guess a guy with long red hair is too ambiguous. Oh well, at least I got to play with colours, even though I still haven't completely warmed up to red plus green.
Yukina.
Maybe I should just try pure fanart for a while because, really, who cares about OCs and random people?

Why can't I design animals anymore

Realistic Yukiko
Well, she's gone through a stylized incarnation, so I guess it's only natural to also get a realistic counterpart. Lotsa references used for this, mainly a dall sheep with the horns of a mountain goat.

I coloured her from memory, and you can see my awesome memory of her design. You can tell how often I draw her. But kidding aside, I have been wanting to redesign her for a while. I gave myself some liberties with the colours to hopefully come up something interesting. Design's not bad, but I'll probably going through some more possibilities - as well as styles, before I settle on something.

This is the first time in a long while that I stayed up late just to draw

It's only fitting that it's Zelda inspired. When I'm not staying up playing Zelda, I'm staying up drawing Zelda. Hurhur.
Just a bunch of Skyward Sword characters and references. I love kikwis.
...I wish I could be Professor Owlan and own my own kikwi.

But that's not all. Let's step away from the wonderful world of Zelda and focus more on me - or really, my fursona.
Stylized fursona
I left out a lot of details because she looks preeetty stylized. makes me want to revisit her design, especially her half-assed markings. I like the star/wing pattern I have here on her rump right now, though.

I've been sleeping in guiltlessly

An elf, I guess? His/her eyes remind me of a hawk.
To help with the gender imbalance...

Yup, school's out, andI haven't been doing much with my break thus far, so here, enjoy some drawings.

Blankey ♥

Me and Blankey
There are times when I wake up and my blankey is the softest, warmest thing in the world. This is especially true now since it's winter.

So let me introduce the one that's kept me warm for years: Blankey! Yes, he - that's right, he - must be referred to that as that is his name. I kind of lied about how Blankey looks like in my picture, because he isn't completely red, but I liked the simplicity of it.

And here's more me with my one true love.
I walk around the house like this

Finals week

Study sessions are so productive. I mean, look at what I got accomplished there:

A girl, my friend's butchered fursona, an otter, two Kikwis, and a box guy. Oh, and an Russian Nazi Domo holding a cake with a crab with whip cream, a cherry, and a sparkler on top.
Link chasing a Cucco, Hiei blasting an isometric drawing, and me going FUUU because I can't understand anything.

What? You think I'd actually study the entire time?
