Meme: Draw This Again

Look at that difference.

When some people do this meme, I don't really see too much of an improvement in the before and after picture. Maybe it's due to them just redrawing a picture a year or a couple of months old. So went all the way back into my picture archives and dug up this piece of crap from 7 years ago to ensure that wouldn't happen.

Check out my MS Paint and mouse skill, guys. Check out that anatomy, and my super original OCs (but you already knew that). I don't really remember what the whole context was, but guess she's watching something tragic... or something. Doesn't look like she's really sad. Maybe's she's actually too shocked to display an emotion? We will never know.
At least it's obvious that she's sad in the picture. I mean, look, there's tears. Nothing says despair better than throwing in a couple of tears. Cuts and bruises too. And muscles, because, realistically, you can't be stick and be fighting off evil demons at the same time.

At first I was gonna render the background a bit more, to really make it obvious of the difference of skill level, but I left it half-assed. I am okay with that.

Insomnia

Anaria

Man, I love doing these quick sketches. It's an excuse to play with things and like filters, colour combos, styles, and all that other stuff I usually never try out when I'm painting something serious (like the picture I'm working on now). Plus, I love like how my messy sketching lineart style looks.

But, I suppose the term "quick" is relative. It was quick compared to my more formal, portfolio worthy pieces, but it still took two-three hours of my time... time I could've been spending sleeping as it was like 3 AM when I decided to go through with it.

So in the end of the day (or really, morning), I went to bed at 6 on a school night. I was okay with it, though, because at least I went to class, as opposed to skipping it like I did last week.

Alright, as you may or may not know, last year I was fortunate enough to be part of Artist Alley in our city's annual con, Anime Evolution. This year, there wouldn't be one, but there are some smaller events happening, all of which offer an Artist Alley type thing.

Cos & Effect
August 13 - 14
Our current replacement for Anime Evolution. Since I don't have Facebook, and it doesn't have a proper website, I don't have much information on this. All I know is that there's going to be an Artist Alley consisting of 25 tables. They'll be accepting applicants on a skill level basis, which means lulzy crappy artists would be weeded out. I don't know if I'll be one of those rejected, however. In any case, deadline for applications are soon so I'll need to start working on some impressive stuff.

From the description, this is more artist market oriented. I think you'll also need to submit work for them to judge, but I think it'll be more lenient, and perhaps leaning more on the "first come first serve" basis. Not sure if I should register, but it's a lot cheaper than Cos & Effect. Plus, it's free if you just want to check it out, which I just might do since it's a one day event anyways.

Coincidentally, both events are held in the same university as last year's Anime Evolution was held.

Alright so that's enough posting for me at one go. I'm missing my Dragonball Z Kai right now. kthxbye.

But yes, these are people in my class, my IT class to be exact (minus the two pics on the far left). You know how hard it is to sketch something decent when a) everyone has their back turned to me or b) when they don't, they're moving around?
Once again, I would like to state that I'm not a creeper. I'm an artist. It's okay.

"Hook, line, and sinker"

The fishing hook is hooked to what is supposed to be her heart. It totally looks like one, right? I should know; I just did my circulation unit in Bio. It's unfortunate how the black stuff around it kills the heart's shape.

I've been hooked (see what I did thar) on this idea for a while so I finally decided to put it onto paper.

Hello, pro-d! However, this has nothing to with it what-so-ever. I drew it in advance during school. Also did the coloured outline thing, carried on from the picture above. I thought the effect looked nice.

Both pics were inspired somewhat by Unhearted by Automatic Loveletter. They're probably my two favorite lines, more in a musical sense anyways (or at least, the last one is). The crying girl has no relation, though I guess I can relate her in by saying the song is sad, or what not. I like how she turned out, though.

I like how the two earlier pictures, my exploration with colour turned out pretty good. Then I killed the streak with this orange and blue monstrosity.

My mary-sue totally kicks your's ass

I decided to search for some memes yesterday, especially one where I didn't have to just find pictures of past work and actually get to draw something. I found something pretty short, but seemed pretty interesting, especially when you're using my characters.

It was supposed to be colouring skin practice, as well as a test to try a different technique, except the colours turned out really blah. I hate having to resort to blues and purples to make the skin interesting, but really, the shades I picked before were just different saturations of the same hue.

Did you think that I totally neglected any art over the past few months of absence? Of course not!

Normally, I'd be explaining the heck out of these pictures, right? Except, honestly, today, I have nothing to say. All of these pictures are pretty much concepts (with the exception of the last one) about Kanaria's clothing, movements, etc.

If you haven’t noticed, I am super spamming some art just to get all this old stuff I haven’t uploaded up here. Ugh.

Remember this post where I showed you guys a preview of what was coming up? Well, this is what it was:

This project was started in the hopes of being able to remember all of my characters in these covenant cards. I think it’s just nice to have a collection. Ideally, every time I make a new character, I’d draw a character card for them.
But I fail.


In any case, onto the technical stuff no one cares about:

Inked using Faber Castell PITT black artist pens, Pilot DR drawing pens, coloured Prismacolour Premier fine line markers, and coloured Staedtler Triplus fine liners.
Coloured using Copic Sketch and Tria markers.

Improvement Timeline: Anaria Part 1: The First Time I Picked Up a Pencil

Oh does this bring back the memories.
This was way back in the day, back when I just quit those accursed drawing lessons. This was back in the day when I was those animu fans we’ve all learned to hate, the ones who hope to make their own series out of their Sailor Moon/DBZ rip off characters.

Now I caution you now: what you’re about to see was drawn back  when I was in grade 4. Actually, if I remember correctly, it was Anaria herself which was the first serious animu character I’ve ever done.
My first animu picture ever, sparking my long animu draw journey. So, overall, it sucks.

Looking back, I’m a little surprised at myself. Though the arms look like they’ve been stretched in a similar fashion people use to do the same to their necks, I actually referenced – yes, people, you heard that right: referenced – my arm for the correct length. Sure, I was sitting down, thus making it seem like my arm reached my knee, but I digress. I still did it.

Came shortly after the first picture. Her friends were included here, but I cut them out.

…Yet again, more Anaria. There are more pictures in this similar fashion (as I traced the general head shape for the rest, LOL) of her friends, but that’s not worth the time.

Though still horrible shitty, this one, at least, improvements are seen. This is probably drawn when I was in the fifth grade. And, if memory serves me right, this is one of those imaginary scenes of her I’d play in my head and over. I believe she’s in a hot spring in the middle of the forest located in the middle of nowhere.
Ignore the “goddess of the stars” part. I think I forget about that later on anyways (proven by the next pic). Besides, that part is pretty unnecessary.

I was going to delve into her horribly Mary-Sue corrupted back-story, but I’ll save that for another day. Right now, I have something else to show you people:

Meet Anaria’s star/moon goddess form (I’ve always thought it was the moon, but after looking back at some old pictures… guess I was wrong?)  This is a pretty good depiction of my improvement over the years. Lets get this started then, shall we?

1. No surprise that the deformed, excuse-to-not-learn-anatomy-because-it’s-my-“style” picture in the top left is the first in my improvement time line. I mean, look at that. I didn’t even try. I used my before-anime-this-is-how-I-drew-people style on it. So probably around grade 4 was she drawn.
2. Middle left, left of all the eyes comes next. I don’t know why, but when the middle chunk of grade 4 rolled around, it brought forth eyes which got cut off the skull and skinny appendages, but what was next to come was anything but.
3. The picture at the middle right (right of the eyes) still contained the same awkwardness when it came to bodies (I even prefer my older, more petite style over this shit), but now, everything ballooned into even more awkward sizes. At this time, I was obsessed with detail, a detail that never really existed once I look back. I would say this picture was drawn around grade 6.
4. I don’t think I need to explain much when it comes to what comes next: bottom left-hand corner. In grade 8, an epiphany dawned upon me: heads are suppose to be round. Gasp, right? You can see the outline of where I sketched out the roundness before-hand.
5. …All this leaves the picture on the top right to be the most recent! And yes, that is true, being only drawn, perhaps, a week ago – maybe not even. Not much to say besides it kicks all the other ones’ asses.
